Scholars, journalists, and even politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain—“al-Andalus”—as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony.

There is only one problem with this widely accepted account it is a myth.

In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise shines light on hidden history by drawing on an abundance of primary sources that scholars have ignored, as well as archaeological evidence only recently unearthed.

This supposed beacon of peaceful coexistence began, of course, with the Islamic Caliphate’s conquest of Spain. Far from a land of religious tolerance, Islamic Spain was marked by religious and therefore cultural repression in all areas of life and the marginalization of Christians and other groups—all this in the service of social control by autocratic rulers and a class of religious authorities.

The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise provides a desperately needed reassessment of medieval Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its “multiculturalism” and “diversity,” Fernández-Morera sets the historical record straight—showing that a politically useful myth is a myth nonetheless.

Ebook The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise Muslims Christians and Jews under Islamic Rule in Medieval Spain Dario FernandezMorera 9781610170956 Books

"A most excellent book. Very readable, and heavily end-noted/documented. 240pages of well-organized information, 95 pages of notes, and an 11 page (selected) bibliography that lists many primary sources as well as secondary. He is a bit repetitive, but he built a robust case for his argument, which I think he made solidly. Some of his end-notes are long, much more than mere citation of a source, and well worth reading.

The quotes from modern sources of "scholarship" at the beginning of each chapter appear to accurately capture the general vie of many academics, but the ensuing chapter material thoroughly cut down such rose-colored views.

The book itself is well-constructed, with a tough binding, quality paper, readable font, and margins sufficiently wide to make some notes in (I've put in dozens for future easy finding of references)."

The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise Muslims Christians and Jews under Islamic Rule in Medieval Spain Dario FernandezMorera 9781610170956 Books Reviews

  • Of the one star reviews of this book, only one (Reza R. Smith) attempted to actually engage the substance of the book. Rather than addressing that review (which is itself highly tendentious), I will offer my own assessment of the substance of the book. Dr. Fernandez-Morera demolishes any notion that al-Andalus was a halcyon period of religious harmony that can be a model for current relations between the Abrahamic faiths. Instead of convivencia, the status of affairs among the religions during the period of Islamic dominance in Spain was, at best, precaria coexistencia. Perhaps the most revelatory aspect of the book is the opening discussion of the state of Islamic historiography in Western academia. Fernandez-Morera exposes the misrepresentation and ignorance of the historical record, particularly in view of the primary sources, of much of the extant scholarship in the West, which indeed portrays Islamic Spain as an Andalusian Paradise. And, he discusses the reasons for the sad state of affairs, which include not only nonsensical postmodern ideology (my characterization), but also the desire to obtain and maintain funding of academic programs from well-heeled Middle Eastern sources. Thus, the seamy aspects of the period are almost entirely ignored by current scholars, thereby creating a myth of a golden age of harmony of religions accompanied by an efflorescence of Islamic generated learning and culture.

Fernandez-Morera shows that instead of bringing tolerance, learning and culture, the Islamic conquest of Spain (carried out as jihad) initially brought death and slavery to all who opposed it, destruction of churches and a Romano-Visigothic civilization, and dhimmitude to its Christian and Jewish subjects. Far from being a harmless tax on persons of other religions, the jizya was imposed to permit the conquerors to live off the subservient population, and to intentionally humiliate non-Muslims. The applicable juridical status of non-Muslims was inferior to Muslims, and even those who converted were on unequal social terms with their Muslim co-religionists, above only slaves on the social hierarchy. For ordinary Christians and Jews, the marks of subservience were pervasive and obvious, including identifying marks on their clothing (does that sound like some place in the 1930s?) and restrictions on the practice of religion (including, for Christians, the inability to publicly display crosses). For those who wish to see, Fernandez-Morera lists instance after instance (fully footnoted with references to Islamic sources) on pages 210-12 of the impositions and discrimination endured by Christians in al-Andalus. Of course, certain useful Jews and Christians attained relatively high positions, but these were the exception, not the rule. In addition, although most educated people in the West are aware that Isabella and Ferdinand ordered the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492, the Almohad Muslims had previously ordered both Catholics and Jews to convert or suffer expulsion to Africa. For those "ungrateful" Christians who revolted from their dhimmitude status in Granada in 1164, none were left after the revolt. Yusuf subsequently boasted that not a single church or synagogue was left in al-Andalus.

Interestingly, Dr. Fernandez Morera also demonstrates that the status of women was not elevated by the Islamic occupation of Spain. Muslim women were expected to remain home and be veiled when out in public. The legal punishment for a married Muslim woman guilty of adultery was stoning. And, by citing primary Islamic sources, Fernandez Morera demonstrates that female circumcision was indeed practiced in Islamic Spain. Although some women became poets and scholars, these were largely non-Muslim women who had been enslaved. The more likely position of non-Muslim slave women of al-Andalus, however, was to satisfy the sexual desires of their masters, i.e. to be sexual slaves.

This brief summary of the eye-opening (at least, for most of us that have heard the "golden age" trumpeted loudly and repeatedly by American academics and the media) expose` should be sufficient to demonstrate that Dr. Fernandez-Morera has exploded the myth of an Andalusian paradise. Far from being characterized by tolerance, Andalusia and its non-Muslim inhabitants suffered under the full weight of Islamic hegemony. He has dropped the gauntlet to those who wish to take issue with the well documented and careful conclusions of this study. The supporting footnotes, which are both copious and extended, are well worth close attention inasmuch as they fully substantiate the statements made in the book. I commend Dr. Fernandez-Morera for his courage in publishing this book, inasmuch as, for the sake of the integrity of the historical record, he discredits the multicultural shibboleths that have attained iconic status in today's cultural environment. Such an effort is and will be most unwelcome in a society that wishes to fashion its own truths.

Finally, I wish to briefly respond to one reviewer (Charles) who, while admitting the validity of the historical assertions in the book, lamented the fact that Dr. Fernandez Morera was not more "balanced" in his assessment of al-Andalus. The reviewer bemoans the fact that none of the good aspects of the period are referenced or otherwise offered to provide context to the work. I would suggest, however, that the thesis of the book (as demonstrated by its title) did not lend itself to such an approach. The book was intended as a necessary corrective to a fawning and false historical narrative offered by Anglo-American academia that has distorted public discourse and resulted in a misinformed general public. The book certainly achieved this objective, and both scholars and others who are interested in the subject should be grateful for Dr. Fernandez-Morera's contribution.

  • Author Fernández-Morera is Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In this book he subjects to a withering critique a widespread superstition that Islam, during the “middle ages,” created a superior civilization characterized by interfaith harmony (convivencia) and “tolerance,” as that concept might be understood by today’s ideological multiculturalists. The habit of fostering agenda-driven approaches to history is, of course, not new, but to the extent that the so-called “Golden Age of Islam” is used in contemporary discourse and education as a hedge to counter “Islamophobia,” this book offers an important clarification.
The myth, stated succinctly, holds that while Europe was mired in the ignorance of its “dark ages,” Islam flourished as an enlightened civilization which not only preserved classical learning but passed it on to the West, making possible the greatness of the European Renaissance. The essence of this myth has been stated publicly by president Barack Obama, and in many elementary and secondary schools throughout America. Colleges and universities also foster it through programs of “multicultural understanding” or programs of Islamic Studies (most of which are heavily funded by Saudi Arabia).
The author begins with a clarification of an issue that is tediously and dishonestly muddled by politicians and fashionable academics—the notion that the concept of jihad is mis-applied as a description of the “shock and awe” tactics of conquest seen in the expansion of the Islamic empire in the century following the death of Muhammad. Islamic texts reveal clearly that jihad is, however nuanced it may be, a device of religiously motivated warfare. Fernández-Morera cites the legal texts of the Maliki school of Islamic law prevalent in al-Andalus. “They do not talk of a ‘spiritual inner struggle,’ or of some kind of ‘self-perfecting exertion’ they talk of war against infidels—a Sacred Combat, or Holy War, or Holy Struggle, or whatever other name one may choose to give this religiously mandated war against infidels.”
Indeed, the Maliki school of Islamic “jurisprudence”—the most rigid of the four major schools—prevailed in the alleged paradise of Andalusia (the Arabic re-named designation for Spain). The historical commentaries, both Islamic and Christian/Jewish, testify to widespread depredations carried out by the conquerors of the nascent and creative Hispano-Roman-Visigothic civilization emerging in Spain. One Muslim chronicle characterizes the conquest as so absolute that he describes “not a conquest, but the Judgment Day.”
Nor did the ongoing administration of life in Islamic Spain represent the multicultural harmony today’s myth-makers envision. Jews and Christians were allowed to “practice” their faiths so long as it was not publicly expressed or shared. New churches could not be built, nor older ones renovated, and the special protection tax (jizya) imposed on non-Muslims was meant, specifically, to symbolize their state of humiliation. These are just a few of the many features of the institution of dhimmitude that is central to Islamic law. Fernández-Morera vividly defines what the system of dhimmitude really was (and is, where it may be applied today) “A basic fact is lost in discussions and arguments about the details of the life of the Christian dhimmis of Spain . . . and about how much or how little they benefited from Islamic ‘toleration’—namely, that they were by definition a subaltern group, a fourth-or fifth- class marginalized people in a hierarchical society, and that they were the victims of an extortion system, the dhimma, that gave them the choice that gangsters give to their victims pay to be protected, or else.” [italics in book’s text]
Culturally, the Islamic “golden age” was heavily dependent on the achievements of the prior, and superior, civilizations conquered by the Islamic armies. Contrary to the popular characterization of civilization being “saved” by the glories of Islamic enlightenment, most of the intellectual achievements of Islamic civilization were derived from Christian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian scholars. The sustaining and recovery of classical learning would have taken place without, and perhaps even more powerfully, without the spread of Islam. “The Visigothic kingdom had functioned as a preserver of classical culture in the difficult centuries after the disintegration of the Western (Latin) Christian Roman Empire, and was in the process of creating a new Visigoth-Hispano-Roman civilization of its own, in part by drawing upon the classical legacy of the Roman Empire preserved in the Christian Greek Roman Empire [with its center in Constantinople].”
Many other cultural “innovations” attributed to Islam, it turns out, have their origins elsewhere, including the famous so-called “Arabic numerals,” which originated in India. Citing scholar of Islam Dominique Urvoy, even the Arabic script so noted for its beauty and power “may have been invented by Christian missionaries from the Christianized Arab city of Hira in ancient Iraq.” Also significant is the Maliki school’s prohibition on musical instruments and songs (a prohibition that is embraced by other schools of Islamic “jurisprudence” to this day).
Of special interest to this reviewer is the author’s citation of how Islamic art and architecture depended on Muslim “cannibalization” of previous classical and Christian art forms, concepts, and techniques. Interestingly, even the typical “Islamic” horseshoe arch with its alternating striped decoration was known and employed in Visigothic Spain prior to the Muslim presence. [To this day, the archetypal Islamic mosque reflects dependency on Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, the greatest architectural structure in the Christian world in ancient times.]
Instead of representing a convivencia, Fernández-Morera sees Islamic Spain as more a situation of precaria coexistencia between Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities, all of which were suspicious of outsiders and acted to protect their intra-community authority. Nor was Islamic Spain without its periodic massacres and revolts by groups who chafed under the institution of dhimmitude.
The author gives significant attention to the Reconquista, the centuries-long efforts of Spanish people to reclaim their land from the Islamic program of colonialization and destruction of cultural memory (through the Arabizing of names of towns, regions, architectural destruction, etc.). The result of the Reconquista, in which ultimately Islam was expelled from the land (and therefore viewed negatively by conventional academic culture), was the flourishing of Spanish lyric and narrative poetry, the presence of such historical figures as Saint Teresa of Avila, Miguel de Cervantes, painters like Diego Velasquez and El Greco. One is led to meditate on what would have been the effect of subsequent European civilization had Charles Martel not gathered an army to meet and defeat the Muslim colonialist armies at Tours in 732, or if Poland’s John Sobieski had not acted similarly to defend the gates of Vienna in 1683 against the rampaging jihadists of the Ottoman Muslims. Given what we know of Islamic law, we would not, today, have the art of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and countless others, nor the Louvre or Vatican museums among others.
“Ideas,” as Richard Weaver observed so powerfully in his book of that title, “have consequences.” In this regard, Darío Fernández-Morera presents and defends his thesis that “few periods in history have been more misrepresented than that of Islamic Spain.” It is sad to reflect that in today’s atmosphere of threat (in response to “offensive” ideas) and multiculturalist ideological tyranny, the author earns and deserves the designation of “courageous.” One would hope that the book would have an impact in the educational world, but, as they say, don’t hold your breath.

Mother Is a Verb An Unconventional History Sarah Knott 9780374213589 Books Reviews

  • What a treasure. This is "What to Expect When You're Expecting" for historians and academias. Sarah Knott has a formal writing style that I appreciated. She writes this fact-filled stroll through the history and stages of motherhood as if writing a descriptive novel. She injects her personal anecdotes, making it modern and relatable also. I found myself switching from the book to research often to dive deeper into concepts I hadn't previously heard, such as "flirking like a flounder". The book gives a comprehensive view of motherhood spanning ages. I found myself questioning what have we lost and what have we gained through all these changes. It's a meticulously researched work. With so much information to cover, this could have easily been published as a dry text book, but Sarah Knott is more than a historian, and her delightful literary skills make this an enjoyable read. Well done.

This will be a great gift to any expecting mother.
  • I received an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

The history often comes across as more academics and explicitly feminist, but it is comprehensive and very interesting. A wonderful complement you all the books released about the struggles of modern mothering as well as a testament to the historical strength of women

Opening Up by Writing It Down Third Edition How Expressive Writing Improves Health and Eases Emotional Pain Audible Audio Edition James W Pennebaker Joshua M Smyth Douglas James LLC Echo Point Books Media Books Reviews

  • I would highly recommend that if you're looking for information about the physiological and physical affects that mental illness and trauma can have on people, and the benefits of expressive writing, that you pick this book up. They focus primarily on sociological and scientific research, so if what you want are writing exercises or a how-to, this is not for you. There are some to get you started and to help you understand what the authors are trying to convey, but it is not a workbook by any means.

As boring as reading about research studies sounds, it's not like that at all. Pennebaker's writing is readable and not at all dense as academics tend to be when they're trying to put an over priced degree to good use. It's not at all like reading a thesaurus from start to finish. The author(s) provide a lot of real life examples and present their studies in a story telling or conversational format. It's like if one of your friends was telling you about a time they interviewed someone. They discuss personal experiences and the effects mental ailments had on them. They cover a wide variety of conditions and situations, as well as studies that other researchers have done, and pull it all together in a simple and digestible way. This isn't a textbook.

This book is more like someone saying "Hey, I think this would probably help you. It won't cure you but I see you're hurting and want you to get better. You seem skeptical so I'll tell you why." The best part of their research is that they are honest about the methods in which the studies were conducted, any potential bias the facilitators may have had or expectations that they had, and they pull studies and collaborations from universities world wide so they are not just presenting their own work exclusively. They are open about ambiguous data that may not have significant findings, or have not been studied enough to be conclusive, but are worth noting, as well as studies that resulted in findings they didn't expect or could have been done better in hindsight. You get an overview of the history of their field, the ground breaking accomplishments and shortcomings (something most departments don't readily admit).

Most importantly they are blunt about the reality of what Expressive Writing can and cannot do. I was worried a couple pages into the introduction that this would turn into an ad for a magical life solving product or method (yoga, essential oils, that crazy wrap thing, for example), but that didn't happen and instead I was pleasantly surprised by author's integrity and passion for wellness, people, and their craft. It's incredibly easy and common for academics to manipulate their research. That's part of the reason we will never know if coffee is killing us or giving us eternal life, yet we tune it at 11 p.m. every time to find out the latest wishy washy science claims.

I wouldn't put expressive writing in that category. I've not only been able to use it to help myself in the middle of a divorce, while trying to cope with a mood disorder, depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADD, etc. There's a lot on my plate right now. I've been able to sit down and write with intention and focus to identify problems, solutions, and feelings, rather than ranting with anger and escalating myself. It's helped to not only work on coping and self soothing skills and preventative maintenance, but has improved the ways that I address community conflict through social media platforms. We can either be productive discussing social issues or we can seriously hurt ourselves and our peers by using careless language. Expressive writing and conflict resolution skills have helped tremendously.

I don't know what else to say. It's a good resource. I know it's irritating for some that it's not a book of writing prompts. I'm fairly certain the author does have one like that, though, and if not he does endorse an online journal website that provides them but I cannot remember the website name, but another author that specializes in expressive writing contributed an add on for it.

I'm quite thankful for the book, it was worth the price, and by far has been the most useful so far.
  • This book clearly explains many ways in which writing can help with emotional and other pain, as it says on the cover. However, it does not provide much in the way of practical exercise, specific guidance or example. In part this is on me as I did not read the description closely enough. I was counting on this part of the description "includes practical exercises to help you try expressive writing for yourself." and as mentioned there isn't much. So, 3 stars for me. If I was looking for a book on why writing could help and how it helps, with examples and case studies, I would have given 4 or maybe 5 stars. I will look for another book.
  • It's difficult to write about what is often called a "soft science" with many different variables. These authors leave no soft spots in the subject of expressive writing. The subject matter and their highly readable presentation stimulate both curiosity and the building of a solid foundation for further study. An excellent read
  • Good research paired with great writing exercises to work through what's holding you back.
  • Excellent book on the case for writing about stressful, life-changing events to help relieve brain from having to think about it.
  • This is the best book ever! The center of the universe when it comes to dealing with life.
  • Great book and very useful. Helped me a lot.
  • Well researched theory, but it's not a one size fits all. If you're a journaler, definitely read this. I think Pennebaker's journaling exercises are helpful in slowing down our thinking and making sense of our inner workings. Although, definitely not for everybody.

Rotten Lil Peaches 2 The Coldest Winter edition by Sa'id Salaam Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • Part two picked up were one left off. All three back together. Low key hating. Meka still thinking she's the top betrer than all of them. Quinna still having changed, gotten worst. Autumn/Winter trying to be a friend to both and ready to leave them and the good behind. That ending. Part three oh my.
  • Can't wait until part 3! Very good series . I love this author and all of his books ! Always a good purchase
  • I have laughed and gasped these girls are wild good read i hope they get themselves together. . . .
  • I am thirsty for part three!!! I feel like I know the characters personally. I will definitely be staying tuned.
  • So I have read other work from this author and his dry sense of humor is something else. However, the messages within that humor are loud and clear.
-As far as Ms. Autumn/Winter, she has likable traits. Like her wanting more for herself being the main one. However, she just seems so fake. Like she stays putting these girls down that she’s constantly around. But it’s like why still hang with them when you feel so ill about them?? That’s the part that has irritated me the most in this story. Because if I don’t like someone and definitely don’t agree with how they get down I would’ve been stopped hangin with them. So that part has me super confused also.
-Another thing is I’ve read other stories about girls down in the dump and they go get it and make it happen. Autumn really should have been ten toes down from the time her mother passed. Instead she moves in with Meka someone she constantly judges. So it’s like is Autumn just a user? Using others to benefit herself, but really having no good intentions? Hmm I can’t wait to see how things pan out for Ms. Autumn!
  • I really enjoyed this book! It definitely dives deep into what is going on in the hood on a day to day basis. I love how the author has really evolved Autumn's character. She went from doing a lot of observing to actually being out into real life situations where she had to fear the consequences. Meka is following in her mother's footsteps step by step and Qianna is just going with the flow, a bad flow. These Peaches definitely depict a real life girls in a way that it could really happen. This book is definitely a page turner! I can't wait for part 3!!!
  • It was sad what happened to Desi. She wasn't the greatest mother but she loved Autumn the best way she knew how. After tragedy struck Autumn realized after living will Tammy and Meka. She really wanted to make something out of herself. Dealing with Tango she thought she didn't have to be out there wilding like her two friends Qianna and Meka. However she still ended up deaing with some foolishness behind him. Tammy don't realize that although Meka is following in her footsteps. Meka is not paying attention to anything except dollar signs. Qianna is a lost cause. This child don't have a clue that she put herself in harms way being loose and is delusional about it. Her life is on a downward spiral. I can not wait to read part three. I want to see how Autumn is going to react to the bombshell that Meka dropped on her.
  • This is one of the BEST series I have read .

It has me on an emotional roller coaster
I cheer them on , I cry for them , I be ready to fight them, laugh at them all of the above . I swear you need to make these books movies I read them go to sleep and dream about them . Lmao my favorite author

Puerto Rico National Geographic Adventure Map National Geographic Maps Adventure 9781566955188 Books Reviews

  • This review is written from the point of view of the tourist from the US mainland that would want to rent a car in Puerto-Rico.

To the best of my knowledge there are four categories of roads in PR
US Interstate class highways, signaled with the typical Interstate blue and red shield. Usually toll roads. Posted speed limits typically 65 mph. Best. (note rentals usually come with a pass for the tolls for a small additional fee on top of the toll)
Other major highways, signaled with a blue-only shield (or sometimes black-only shield). Similar to a US highway. Usually free. Posted limits typically 55 mph. Better.
Major roads with a lane in each direction, signaled with a blue and yellow pentagonal sign similar to a US county road sign (new signs) or a black and white sign with the outline of PR similar to a US state road sign (old signs). Similar to a US county road. Posted speed typically varies between 35 and 50 mph. Good.
Minor roads with only 3/4 of a lane in each direction (so you have to slow down when you cross an incoming vehicle) signaled with a black and white circular sign (at least for new signs, seems old signs for minor roads are the same as old signs for major roads). No US equivalent. Don't expect averaging more than 20 mph even if no speed limit posted.

Free maps given by rental agencies are usually small and don't always clearly differentiate between major and minor roads. GPS also typically assume that you can average 50 mph on a minor road and make you take them when the proper approach is in fact to stick to major roads as much as possible, even if that increases the driving distance significantly.

So one needs a good map. And this map is the best map I found so far.

However this map is not perfect. It has some errors. For example on the south east of the island it claims that Interstate 53 (PR-53) is completed when it is clearly not the case! Between Yabucoa and Guyama one has to take PR-901 and PR-3 which are at best major roads with posted speed limits of only 25 mph! (and from having driven there recently following this map from Fajardo to Salinas I doubt that PR-53 will be completed any time soon). A less problematic example on the west is Interstate 2 (PR-2) which is more of a major highway than an Interstate between San German and Aguadilla.

In short I recommend you purchase and study this map prior to a trip to the island (and of course bringing it with you) but consider supplementing it with something else (e.g. maps from a guide, GPS, etc).
  • The quality on this map is excellent. It's large and the print will be easily read by most. On one side you have the East side of PR covered, and on the other side is the West. On the East side you also have 2 insets Old San Juan and the San Juan area. Isla Mona and Vieques are shown in their geographic areas off to the right and lower right of the island. The markings are clear and the quality of the paper used is top notch. Freeways and place of (possible) interests are clearly marked. I purchased the map to hang on my wall and study before I leave for the island. I got more than I expected in this price range, so I'm thrilled.

    Great purchase. Highly recommended.
  • I used this to plan my trip and it was wonderful. My friends laughed at me for bringing it along because who needs a very well made, showing all the roads type map anymore? We did. Data in PR is horrible and we used this to get around more than once. Great detail, didn't tear.
  • This map cannot and will not replace your GPS. However, GPS capability was limited in Puerto Rico when it came to identifying locations, such as restaurants, places to see etc. I have a nuvi, with map updates. it was great to get me around the island. I did not get lost. If you have been there before, you should know, many streets has no street signs to identify them. Almost everyone uses land marks! Anyway, GPS was great IF I KNEW where I wanted to go! This map tells you what's available and where you should go. I always checked the location in the map and inputted in GPS to get me there.Map is cheap, delivers fast and it is USEFUL. It shows point of interests, lists historical and tourist sites, identifies beaches, land marks, reveals hidden jewels in PR. You should not be wasting money if you buy this map.
  • I used this so much during my trip in Feb 2018 to Puerto Rico. It's best to use it for highway adventures but I will admit, it got us pretty lost in the capital of San Juan. It seems like that city's exit numbers are different than they are on the map. We had to bust out our phones for GPS but other than that, we used this map a bunch.
  • Apparently AAA does not have maps on Puerto Rico, where I am going on vacation, so I had to find one elsewhere. This covers all the major highways, freeways, roads and includes the entire island. It is a heavy paper too so it should stand up to wear and tear better than most maps.
  • Second time to puerto rico with friends and this time I purchased this map on the recommendation of a fellow traveler. Our hope was to be able to navigate the island a little better than the last time and after being told by numerous people that the GPS is useless there decided it was worth a try.

It is indeed a very helpful tool for getting around the island and planning your stops. The key is extensive and shows things like beaches, parks and tourist sites.

My only complaint is Why...Why....Why did the makers decide to put 1/2 of puerto rico on one side and the other half on the other????? While driving this is enough to drive you crazy and is very inconvenient. I understand putting it all on one side would mean smaller print perhaps but I may have been willing it may have been worth it.

Although the two sided map is a nucance at times overall I still give it 4 stars as it was the most helpful toll we found for getting around without getting lost.
  • While not intended as purely a road map, the large size, larger than all other available maps, will make it useful for that purpose. Unfortunately, a number of routes are wrongly depicted as controlled access highways, which can lead someone onto an inferior road that he or she was not expecting. This includes route 2 (Hatillo to San German), route 3 (Canovanas to Fajardo, and Yabucoa to Guayama) and route 10 (in its entirety). I hope that the good folks at the Geographic correct these errors in their next edition.

The Bondage Breaker Overcoming Negative Thoughts Irrational Feelings Habitual Sins Audible Audio Edition Neil T Anderson Shawn Compton LLC Dreamscape Media Books Reviews

  • I have owned this book for over ten years but never got around to reading it until just lately. I'm 48 and have been a Christian for 44 years and I have been deceived, tempted and accused by satan for most of my life and agreed with most everything he has led me to believe. What has freed me is the Truth of God's Word and discovering who I am in Christ, and gut wrenching confession and denouncement of the sins that have kept me in bondage. I strongly urge every Christian to read this book.
  • Ever since adolescence I have struggled with lustful thoughts and pornography. I knew these things were wrong and would confess these but it would always end up in a cycle of sinning, repenting, sinning again and feeling defeated and condemned. Mr Anderson explains in this book our identity, position and authority in Christ. If we submit to God we have authority over the enemy and can command him to leave us. For the past 5 years I have struggled with fatigue and realised that the enemy could be behind this. Ever since reading this book I have been set free from both the lustful thoughts and fatigue and know how to deal with these should they come back. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
  • I purchased this for my daughter when she told me she was having trouble with her thoughts. I read the original Bondage Breaker book and it helped me tremendously. Until I read this book, I thought I was losing my mind. It helped me to realize what I was experiencing was spiritual warfare. At the time, I was a new Christian and was terrified I was evil because of the thoughts swirling in my mind. This book helped me to realize that not every thought we have is our own. Some are put there by the world and some are put there by Satan. Unforgiveness in our lives can lead to spiritual bondage. I have not read the youth edition but trusted these authors enough to purchase it for my 13 year old daughter.
  • If you are looking for deliverance in your Christian walk this is the book. If you are wanting a victorious walk in your Christian life this is the book. The moment I placed this book in my hand I felt the Lord's might anointing flowing from this book. Read it, it will change your life because Jesus is the Bondage Breaker!!!
  • I've probably bought ten copies of Dr. Anderson's books, this and a few others. I kept giving them away. If you've ever had any supernatural encounters. or are curious about the spiritual realm, read books such as these, from a Christian perspective- do NOT go to occult sources!! Dr. Anderson is very well informed, and reassuring in his knowledge.
  • I have a friend who has a 50 year old son who she thinks has demons but can’t think of a way to destroy them. He grew up a Christian but has been studying eastern mysticism. They live in different states. I hope she reads this and can get him help. It’s a good read for anyone. I was especially interested in the story of the woman with MS who really had demons.
  • Praise GOD for this WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC, tool!

Finally, daily Victory & FREEDOM from EVERYTHING that ever held us prisoner!

What a powerful tool to help us become truly Victorious in ALL areas of living and MOST IMPORTANTLY, becoming like JESUS, in our daily lives!!!!!!! 🙌😁🙌😁🙌😁
  • Best study ever! This enables people to get past their hangups & bondages in order to gain intimacy with Christ. It grows us closer in understanding & truth & breaking of the bondages holding us back from being the powerful Christian God calls us all to be! Such revelation occurring in our small group! Love it!
